Q. How do I renew a book? May alumni renew online, too?

Current AU students, faculty, and staff may renew books online up to 3 times through their personal library account portal, My Library Account. Once logged in, select the loans tab and click the renew button. In order to renew books from different schools, select the school tab on the left side of the screen and renew your books from each school individually. You can watch a short video on this process.

Alumni may only borrow and renew books from the AU Library circulating collection. Alumni can renew their books by navigating to the AU Library website and clicking on the Service option in the left-side menu. Next, click on "For Alumni" and then "Alumni Login" and then "AU Alumni and other Community Users".

Current AU students, faculty and staff: Caution - Items borrowed from each university are listed separately in your library account. You can look at your loans and requests from each university by selecting it from the drop down menu at the top of your library account. If you are having problems renewing, it may be for one of the following reasons:

  • You have already renewed your books for the total 24-week limit (or 3-semester limit for faculty) and need to bring them to any consortium library to have them rechecked-out.
  • A hold/recall has been placed on one of the books.
  • You have $25.00 or more in library fines that you will need to pay off at the affiliated consortium library before you will be permitted to borrow further.
  • Your library account has expired.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns about renewing items by phone at (202) 885-3221 or by email at circulation@american.edu.
