With the exception of resources specifically designated Open Access (OA), Library-provided electronic resources, such as journal articles, e-books, videos, data, and primary sources, may not be downloaded then uploaded into any AI tools or LLMs (Large Language Models). Doing so violates our license agreements and is prohibited by law. Contracts with publishers and vendors explicitly forbid uploading, processing, or otherwise using the content in AI systems. These restrictions apply to all AI tools, including AU-licensed platforms such as Perplexity/Comet and Copilot. Violating these license terms could expose the university to serious legal and financial consequences.

Why isn't this considered "Fair Use" under copyright law? Our contracts and licenses with the vendors govern what is permitted. Contracts and licenses prohibit downloading and uploading covered articles to AI tools. Open Access articles are excepted.

Restrictions also do not apply to AI search features embedded in some library databases, such as JSTOR, or to the AI Search Assistant on the library's homepage. Embedded tools are designed to work within the licensing framework and may be used appropriately with that content.  To learn more about embedded AI features, consult this FAQ

Open Access materials included in the library's collections are not governed by licensing restrictions and may be used with AI tools. This FAQ explains how to find Open Access (OA) materials in the library's collections.
